The Toughbook 56 is upgraded with improved performance, greater connectivity options, enhanced thermal management, and the latest security standards. Additionally, the laptop is backed by an extensive warranty program, ToughCare, which covers predictable service costs, device protection, and field engineering support.

Hardware specifications for the Toughbook 56 include the Intel Core Ultra Series 2 processor, which is specified for AI-enabled tasks, paired with an optional 8GB AMD Radeon Pro GPU or Intel Arc graphics options. It supports 16 to 64GB DDR5 RAM and 512 to 2TB OPAL or FIPS-encrypted SSDs. The laptop’s modular design includes room for three custom xPAKs, a battery, RAM, and SSD options. It supports a 24-hour battery life with an optional second battery. The display is a 14-inch 16:10 display with an optional 1000 nit touchscreen and protected by Corning Gorilla Glass. It also features a 5-megapixel web camera.

Panasonic has also added several features to the Toughbook 56 based on customer feedback, including louder 98dB speakers, a keyboard backlight timeout, and a slide cover for the power port, among others.

The Toughbook 56 was engineered with advanced thermodynamics and heat dispersion, as part of its ruggedness. It is certified by several durability benchmarks, including 3-foot Drop, MIL-STD-810H, IP53, and Airworthiness (FAA standard). Having handled models of the ToughBook 56 on the Flight Deck of the Intrepid Museum in the afternoon sun, with no apparent overheating or visible changes in performance. At 4.66lbs and with a built-in handle, the Toughbook 56 is relatively light and easy to carry around (not so much to balance flat on your hand, but that might depend on the person).

The laptop is 45 and 5G-ready and comes with several other connectivity options, including Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth, and up to three Ethernet port configurations (1 Gbps standard, with 2.5 and 10 Gbps optional), and dual SIM (physical and eSIM). The laptop can also connect to multiple major carriers and dedicated responder networks, including AT&T, FirstNet, Verizon, Verizon Frontline, and T-Mobile.

The Toughbook 56 has an elaborate security system that tackles several layers of protection, from hardware, firmware, operating system, and endpoint. Toughbook Guard protects the supply chain by detecting threats before a device is purchased or booted. Toughbook Total Defense provides end-to-end security at every device level. SentinelOne provides AI-powered endpoint protection for stopping ransomware. Absolute Security gives IT visibility and control across all layers of the device. Several layers of encryption standards are built into the device hardware and firmware, including Toughbook Guard, FIPS 140-2, and TCG OPAL.

The Toughbook 56 is also backward compatible with Toughbook 55 and Toughbook 54 vehicle docks. This supports over 10 years of compatibility for customers opting to maintain their current docking while updating to new Toughbook 56 models.

The Toughbook 56 will be available in May, starting at $3,325.

Reports indicate that Apple has signed a three-year exclusive deal with Samsung Display to supply OLED panels for the upcoming foldable device. While Apple is known to split its display deals between several suppliers for its other hardware, the brand has opted to work solely with Samsung on this project because other suppliers that work with foldable panels have not met Apple’s standards, according to Korean publication The Elec.

The deal, proposed by Samsung, could give the manufacturer an advantage for several years as Apple would not be able to work with other suppliers until at least 2029. The report detailed that Apple’s other usual display suppliers include BOE and LG Display. The Chinese supplier, BOE Technology Group, is working to supply foldable panels to other brands, such as Huawei. However, Apple is said to have passed on using these components due to them not meeting the brand’s durability, quality, and yield requirements. LG Display is currently not heavily invested in the foldable panel business.

Recent reports indicate that Apple is in its trial production phase of the foldable iPhone, with plans to begin mass production in July if its current plans go smoothly. Similarly, Samsung Display has to start mass-producing an initial shipment of 3 million foldable OLED panels for Apple during the second quarter of 2026.

Other reports suggest Samsung Display may yield up to 10 million foldable OLED panels during the second half of the year, with the manufacturer likely to use its latest ‘M16’ material to develop the panels, according to ET News.

Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman noted that the foldable will open into a wide display landscape view (hotdog-style), with Apple planning updates to iOS to give it more of an iPadOS flair, given its size and design.

CNET’s Prakhar Khanna, noted that while consumers have waited for the launch of the iPhone foldable, other smartphone manufacturers have mastered several device pain points that Apple stands to benefit from, including creaseless folding screens, antireflective screens, larger batteries that fit within slimmer designs, near flagship quality cameras, multitasking improvement thanks to the larger screens, and increased durability in designs.

The official name of the foldable iPhone remains unknown; however, the media has taken to calling the device the “iPhone Fold” or “iPhone Ultra” based on insider reports.

The foldable is expected to exceed $2,000.

The reports, coming from a Chinese source, suggest that manufacturer Foxconn is leading the trial production of the foldable iPhone, with mass production of the handset expected to begin in July, barring any hiccups. According to PhoneArena, it is common for live leaks of the production models to surface during this period. Apple employees also typically get models to test as well. If the testing phase goes smoothly for the long-awaited product, it could launch in the fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro.

Sources have also confirmed to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman that the foldable iPhone is slated for a September launch alongside Apple’s flagship smartphones. Gurman noted that the launch of the foldable iPhone, the official name of which remains unknown, is part of Apple’s efforts to make its brand stand out in an ever-competitive market of high-spec phones, slender phones, budget devices, and foldables.

Over three years, Apple has plans to revamp old flagship products and roll out new ones. Last year saw updates to the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, and the introduction of the iPhone Air. This year will see the introduction of the iPhone foldable. In 2027, the brand is likely to follow up with a new iPhone Air model and a new iPhone 18e to round out its low-budget option. There are also potential plans to overhaul the highest-tier iPhones as the brand recognizes the product’s 20th anniversary, Gurman noted. The company is also currently commemorating its 50th anniversary in 2026.

Metro by T-Mobile CALLoGNE

While the everyday plans at Metro by T-Mobile remain available, starting at $40 for unlimited talk, text, and 5G data, the network advertised its “CALLoGNE” for April Fools’ Day. The would be fragrance carries notes of Eau de New Phone, with the promotion featuring models holding a phone-shaped perfume bottle. Instead, customers will have to settle for purchasing a new device for that “new phone feeling,” the brand said.

Yahoo’s Scrōll Stoppr

Yahoo! attempts to help people quell their smartphone dependency this April Fools’ Day, with a finger accessory called the Scrōll Stoppr, which hinders you from doom scrolling. The accessory is akin to an ergonomic thimble for your thumb for regulating smartphone usage. Yahoo shared a dramatic promotion across its social media platforms, showing how the Scrōll Stoppr can return you back to regular life activities when you’re not distracted by your phone. The brand even has units of the Scrōll Stoppr on sale for the duration of April 1, on Yahoo’s TikTok shop for $4.99 plus free shipping.

Fortnite April Fools’ Update

Developers of the popular video game, Fortnite, released an interesting update for April Fools’ Day, which will be available for only 24 hours. The characters are edited with huge heads and can ride on each other's shoulders. Sound effects are updated to include “pew, pew” finger sounds and splat sounds when a character falls. The update has also introduced llamas that players can ride.

Snapchat Reals

Snap Inc. has used April Fools’ Day to take a jab at its competitors with an announcement rebranding its Spotlight feed on Snapchat under the name “Reals.” This mirrors the name of Instagram’s Reels feature, which also serves a similar function, producing 60-second vertical video clips.

The company’s co-founder and CEO Evan Spiegel took to social media to discuss the change, highlighting the “real” aspect of the “Reals” feature, and that users can “keep it Real on Snapchat.”

Vintage Macintosh Accessories

The team at WaterField Designs created a unique April Fools’ Day prank, featuring accessories for long-retired Macintosh products. These include a backpack for the Macintosh SE/30 and a belt holster for the Apple Newton. WaterField Designs described the Macintosh SE/30 backpack as made of “durable waxed canvas and full-grain leather” to “outlast the technology it carries.” The Apple Newton Ranger Holster was described as “built for frontier-level productivity.” Both accessories were priced at $2,026 on their product pages, with the purchase button set to “sold out.” Customers likely got them during their respective 1987 and 1993 launch dates.

The consumer hardware brand Elgato, had some fun with the gamification of gambling this April Fools’ Day, creating a promotion for its Stream Deck Plus Lever. The concept emposes a slot machine add-on. Elgato created an elaborate product page, full of important sounding brand speak. The company noted “this jargon doesn’t mean anything we just thought it sounded kinda cool.” Clicking on the product page to try and activate the level results in more April Fools’ Day hijinks

MSI MEG Cat Holder X87

MSI’s April Fools’ Day prank may actually be a desired accessory for many cat owners. The consumer electronics brand shared a promotion on its social media channels for an “MEG Cat Holder.” The accessory is essentially a cat bed that can attach to computer monitors, allowing cats to climb up and rest without interrupting owners from their device usage. MSI boasts the accessory’s specifications as a monitor arm with an attachable cat bed. The arm comes in white or black color options, can extend in a 90-degree rotation, has customizable RGB, and a built-in heating pad. MSI cheekily added that Mochi the Cat, featured in the promotional images, is not included.

Many fans on X responded with questions about the MEG Cat Holder, as if it were a real product. They inquired about whether the accessory would be able to support the weight of their chunky felines (MSI claims the MEG Cat Bed X87 supports weights up to 67lbs). They also shared images of their own cats named Mochi.

Verizon x Connor Storrie

Verizon’s April Fools’ Day prank was a horror-style theatrical trailer directed by Nia DaCosta and featuring actor Connor Storrie. The four-minute short film pokes fun at slasher movies and technology issues as Storrie believes he’s in danger in his remote cabin. He then realizes his Verizon-powered phone in his back pocket was triggering the smart home features that were spooking him.

Sega Sanic Collection

Sega has released an official “Sanic Collection” t-shirt line for April Fools’ Day, featuring three t-shirts Sanic, Shewdew, and Knackles t-shirts that will be available for purchase only on April 1st.

Dyson Airwrap Fur

Dyson Beauty’s cheeky April Fools’ Day promotion is the Airwrap Fur, a range of products for pet styling. The promotion features dogs, cats, and horses with beautifully coiffed coats and manes. For specifications, Dyson says the Airwrap Fur has flea detection and delivers 90% more bounce, while the Airwrap Topcoat gives 80% sheen. Joke’s on Dyson. The brand doesn’t realize the bougie pet owners and groomers who might actually purchase these products.

Intel announced its latest lineup of commercial components on Wednesday. These features will power devices in the enterprise, education, government, and small-business sectors in the coming years.

Having showcased the new offerings to media and analysts at its Intel Pro Day ahead of the launch, the company demonstrated potential use cases for the components. Intel particularly highlighted various media, security, and AI-based functions, some of which are already deployed by certain preliminary partners.

Intel’s professional tier product lineup includes the Core Ultra Series 3 for Business PCs, the Intel vPro Platform, the Intel Arc Pro B-series GPUs, and the Intel Xeon 600 Workstation Processors. The company noted that it has over 125 designs in its portfolio of the different professional sectors it supports.

The new Intel Core Ultra Series 3 processor for Business PCs focuses on performance, power efficiency, and battery life. The brand noted that these PCs can provide over 30% faster single and multi-thread performance, up to 30% higher productivity, up to 80% better graphics, and up to 4x AI performance in comparison to four-year-old systems, which denotes the average PC refresh cycle.

The new Intel Arc Pro graphics cards focus on content creation, engineering workloads, and AI reasoning. The 2026 lineup includes the Arc Pro B70 and B65 discrete GPUs. Built on Xe2 architecture, they support up to 32Xe Cores and 32GB VRAM. AI improvements include optimized performance for multi-user and multi-agent workloads, and strong price-to-performance for inference for workstation and edge setups.

Performance benefits on the Arc Pro B70 include up to 2.2x larger context windows, up to 6.2x faster responses in multi-agent and multi-user workloads, and up to 2x tokens per dollar performance, compared to competitor graphics cards.

The Intel vPro Platform 2026 updates include the Intel vPro Certification Program. The brand has collaborated with several partners to certify applications and accessories, which will allow them to connect to devices faster and work more efficiently in the background, reducing CPU load. Intel vPro Intelligence with Device IQ uses AI-powered data to diagnose and resolve device issues, to assist IT staff, and reduce downtime. Intel vPro Fleet Services allows for easier remote access and disaster recovery through a turnkey Software-as-a-Service option, which is set up at the silicon level and is integrated with Microsoft Intune. Intel vPro Security Enhancements adds real-time total storage encryption for Microsoft BitLocker and AI-based threat detection with Intel Threat Detection Technology (DTECT).

The Intel Core Ultra Series 3 and Intel vPro commercial PCs will be available starting March 31, 2026.

The Intel Arc Pro B70 discrete GPUs will be available starting March 25, 2026. The card will be available under Intel branding and partner branding, including ARKN, ASRock,

Gunnir, Maxsun, and Sparkle. Intel’s suggested starting price for the Arc Pro B70 discrete GPUs is $949, while partner pricing will vary based on final model configurations.

The Intel Arc Pro B65 discrete GPUs will be available starting in mid-April 2026. The GPU will be sold through Intel’s AIB partner network in varied models, with pricing based on those configurations.

The Intel Xeon 600 Processors will be available starting March 25, with suggested pricing between $499 to $7,699 spending on the final component configuration.

Apple has announced a new laptop that is the price of a smartphone. The new MacBook Neo was unveiled at the brand’s New York City launch event on Wednesday, with a $599 price tag, ushering in a new era of budget devices. 

While the MacBook Air has long stood as Apple’s version of an inexpensive MacBook, the brand is now really making an effort to dip below the $1,000 price point in terms of affordability. Apple has outfitted the MacBook Neo with several design and hardware elements to account for its lower price. 

A standout proposition of the laptop is its aluminum design, which allows it to maintain the high-end look known to the MacBook family. At 2.7 pounds, it matches the MacBook Air in terms of weight. The Neo comes in blush, indigo, silver, and citrus color options.

The laptop uses the A18 Pro chip, which originated in the iPhone 16 Pro. This 2024 chip allows the MacBook Neo to have a lower price while maintaining many modern features, such as all-day battery life and Apple Intelligence. While not as powerful as the M-series chips that are typically designated for laptops and computers, Apple is taking a similar approach with the Neo to brands that make budget Windows laptops and Chromebooks by using a mobile processor. 

The laptop features a 13-inch Liquid Retina display with a 2408 x 1506 resolution and 500 nits of brightness, as well as an anti-reflective coating. Specifications-wise, the laptop includes 8GB RAM and 256GB and 512GB storage options. Notably, Touch ID on the keyboard is only available on the higher-storage version. The all-day battery life supports up to 16 hours of power in a single charge. 

While the device includes a 1080p webcam and a two-USB-C port and headphone jack I/O setup, it does not feature a MagSafe connector, likely further contributing to its low price. It runs macOS Tahoe as its software. 

The MacBook Neo is available starting today and will go on sale on March 11. The laptop was announced alongside the new iPhone 17e, iPad Air M4, M5 MacBook Air, and MacBook Pro series.

As Apple quickly rolls its latest model out for pre-order on March 4 and for market release on March 11, the Nothing brand is prepping for its launch event of the Nothing 4a on March 5. Meanwhile, Google is anticipating the market launch of its Pixel 10a on the same day. The iPhone 17e is being offered at an introductory price of $599, with a number of carrier offers and trade-in deals. The Pixel 10a starts at $499, with similar discounts and deals. 

The current launch season is sure to be interesting for budget-conscious consumers to have their pick of the litter, despite many Apple fans being known to be fiercely loyal. Opinions on the iPhone 17e have already pointed out its similarities to prior device models, such as the iPhone 5 in terms of design, suggesting that the device might not be worth its $600 price tag in 2026. 

Similar accusations have been made about the Pixel 10a, saying it's remained too similar to the Pixel 9a to be considered a decent upgrade. While the Nothing 4a remains hours away from being official, many have noted that the Nothing 3a got a warm reception from the industry.

The smartphone features a 48-megapixel 2-in-1 camera system that supports a 2x telephoto lens and 24-megapixel default capture, in addition to a 12-megapixel TrueDepth selfie-camera. 

Rounding out some of the especially impressive features on the iPhone 17e is its MagSafe and Qi2 support, with fast wireless charging up to 15W. This not only upgrades from 7.5W from the 16e but comes at a time when Android brands are trickling in Qi2 support for select flagship devices, so many budget models are getting left behind.

The iPhone 17e includes a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with a Ceramic Shield 2 protector, providing three times better scratch resistance than the prior generation, in addition to improved anti-reflection. The device also supports IP68 dust and water resistance for even more durability. 

Hardware-wise the smartphone is powered by the A19 chip, which Apple compares as up to two times faster than the iPhone 11, and the C1X cellular modem, which the brand claims is two times faster than the C1 modem in iPhone 16e, and helps provide all-day battery life. In addition, the iPhone 17e supports 50 percent battery charging in around 30 minutes. Software-wise, the smartphone is powered by iOS 26 as well as Apple Intelligence, and the liquid glass design language.

The iPhone 17e is available in black, white, and soft pink color options.

The iPhone 17e starts at $599 for the 256GB model, or $24.95 per month for 24 months with a payment plan. Customers can get up to $400 in credit when trading in an iPhone 11, or up to $599 in credit when trading in an iPhone 13. Individual carriers also have their own trade-in deals for the iPhone 17e. 

Dubbing the devices, the Galaxy S26 Ultra in particular, the ‘Agentic AI phone,’ the brand highlighted several new software features and updates, as well as collaborations with new AI companies, with a true focus on hardware. However, Samsung included some highlight display features, among others, to give the devices a unique spin for 2026.

The specification upgrades on the Galaxy S26, Galaxy S26+, and Galaxy S26 Ultra are moderate, helping to keep the device’s prices steady year-over-year. The devices are powered by a custom Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy chip, with Samsung claiming a 39% more powerful NPU, 19% faster CPU, and 24% more sturdy GPU.

However, the standout feature on the series is sure to be the built-in privacy display, which is the world’s first for mobile phones. Making it so that others cannot see the contents of your screen when viewing it from the side. The feature is customizable between apps and notifications. Users can also toggle on the Maximum Privacy Protection option for the most sensitive applications.  

Having employed AI features on its smartphones for the past two years, Samsung has continued to add intuitive touches to make features more functional. New features to Galaxy AI allow you to screen calls with an AI summary. Other features, such as Now Nudge, generate action prompts within the context of a chat conversation, such as pulling up a link to the Gallery, directing you to recent photos after discussing photos from a recent trip within a chat. Now Brief allows you to keep track of reminders and can update your schedule in real time, based on incoming messages or received emails.

The brand’s legacy Bixby software works as an on-device assistant, helping you navigate and troubleshoot the Galaxy S26 using prompts. Samsung will also partner with Perplexity on the Galaxy S26 within the Ask AI feature in the Samsung browser. Users can collect research across different browser tabs for organization and comparison.

One of Samsung’s most popular AI collaborations with Google Circle to Search is also getting an upgrade. On the Galaxy S26, users will be able to circle to search multiple items at once, to find the items they desire in one search session.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra features a 6.9-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. It has 12GB and 16GB RAM options and 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB internal storage options. The device is powered by a 5,000mAh battery, which supports Super-Fast Charging 3.0 through its 60W Adapter, allowing for 75% charge in around 30 minutes, Wireless PowerShare, and Qi wireless charging through accessory support.

The device’s camera system includes a 200-megapixel f/1.4 wide lens with 2x Optical Quality Zoom, a 50-megapixel f/1.9 ultra-wide lens, and a 50-megapixel f/2.9 telephoto lens with10x Optical Quality Zoom and 5x Optical Zoom. The front camera includes a 10-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto lens with 3x Optical Zoom and a 12-megapixel f/2.2 lens.

Samsung Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+

The Galaxy S26 and Galaxy S26+ feature 6.3-inch FHD+ and 6.7-inch QHD+ AMOLED displays, respectively, with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate. They feature 12GB RAM and 256GB and 512GB internal storage options. The Galaxy S26 is powered by a 4,300mAh battery supporting Fast Wireless Charging 2.0, which allows for 55% charge in around 30 minutes with a 25W Adapter or USB-C cable. The Galaxy S26+ includes a 4,900mAh battery, supporting Super-Fast Wireless Charging, allowing 69% charge in around 30 mins with a 45W Adapter.

The camera system on both devices includes a 50-megapixel f/1.8 wide lens with 2x Optical Quality Zoom, a 12-megapixel f/2.2 ultra-wide lens, and a 10-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto lens with 3x Optical Zoom. The front camera includes a 12-megapixel f/2.2 lens.

Pricing and availability

The Galaxy S26 series is available for pre-order starting today, with the devices officially hitting the market on March 11. The Galaxy S26 Ultra will sell for $1299, while the Galaxy S26+ will sell for $1,099, and the Galaxy S26 for $899. The devices will be available in color options including Cobalt Violet, White, Black, and Sky Blue, as well as Pink Gold and Silver Shadow schemes, which will be Samsung.com exclusives.

Google is providing in its latest device, slight incremental tweaks, to bring consumers into the new year. This is not a device for the year-to-year upgrader. However, if you are coming from Pixel 8a or older, you may find some great benefits. In fact, Google notes that its trade in discount for the Pixel 8a is $215.

The Pixel 10a does bear a striking resemblance to its predecessor, in terms of specifications and design. The device features a 6.3-inch pOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, a Google Tensor G4 processor, 8GB of memory and 128GB and 256GB internal storage options, in addition to a 5,100mAh battery. Its camera system includes a 48-megapixel main f/1.7, OIS lens and 13-megapixel ultrawide f/2.2 lens, and a 13-megapixel f/2.2 selfie camera.

However, Google brings subtle tweaks to the design of the Pixel 10a, getting rid of the camera bump on the newer model so that the back panel is flush. Color options include Lavender, Fog, Obsidian, and a much-appreciated new Berry scheme. Google also notes the sustainability profile of the device, with a 100% recycled aluminum frame. It is also the first device with a battery made of recycled cobalt.

The new smartphone has gotten a slight display refresh with the brightness increased to 3,000 nits, up from 2,700 on the Pixel 9a, and an upgrade from Gorilla Glass 3 to Gorilla Glass 7i. The device is also IP68 water and dust resistant for extra durability.

The Pixel 10a also gets some upgrades in the charging department, with a 30-watt USB-C 3.2 port, up from 23-watts on the Pixel 9a. Wireless charging also goes up from 7.5 -watts to 10-watts. In its extreme battery saving mode, the device can run over 120 hours. Notably, the PixelSnap Qi2 charging compatibility Google introduced on the Pixel 10 flagship has not transitioned to the budget model.

In addition to running Android 16, Google has added several AI features to the Pixel 10a. The Camera Coach feature uses AI to guide camera lighting and composition for taking photos. The Auto Best Take feature selects the best image of a burst shots or compiles the best facial expressions for group photos. The Satellite SOS feature allows the Pixel 10a to connect to emergency services without cellular or Wi-Fi. The Quick Share with AirDrop feature allows file sharing between Android and select iPhone models. While AI features might be controversial, this is where the Pixel 10a is most like the flagship Pixel 10 series. The device also updates to Bluetooth v6 in terms of connectivity.

The market price of the Pixel 10a is $499; however, Google is offering several discounts and perks with the new budget device, including the choice of $100 off or a Pixel Buds 2a when preordering. This offer is available until March 11. Those who are signed up for the brand’s email list should have received an exclusive discount code for the deal.

It could showcase refreshed 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, as well as a new low-cost MacBook powered by the A18 chip and featuring fun colors, including yellow, light green, blue, and pink. Mark Gurman noted in his Power Up newsletter that the laptops will feature an aluminum shell, developed with a new manufacturing process that is cheaper and more efficient than the method Apple is currently employing. There is no word on whether the tone of the color options will match prior MacBook colors or if the blue will be similar to the sky blue from last year’s M4 MacBook Air. The laptop is expected to be less than 13 inches and could be as low as $699.

The brand is also set to showcase next-generation iPads at the event, including the eighth-generation iPad Air and 12th-generation iPad. Additionally, the brand is expected to announce the iPhone 17e, a Studio Display update, and a new Apple TV and HomePod mini.

OpenAI alleged in a note sent to the U.S. House Select Committee on Strategic Competition that DeepSeek was targeting its technology and those from similar US companies to use as a base for its AI training.

The process, called distillation, uses an older more powerful AI model to fact check the answers produced from a newer model. The newer model then obtains the information of the older model without having to train on any data.

"We have observed accounts associated with DeepSeek employees developing methods to circumvent OpenAI's access restrictions and access models through obfuscated third-party routers and other ways that mask their source," OpenAI said in the note, viewed by Reuters.

"We also know that DeepSeek employees developed code to access U.S. AI models and obtain outputs for distillation in programmatic ways," the memo added.

DeepSeek became an industry darling in early 2025 amid the launch of its DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1 models. The company was praised for bringing forth an open-source generative-AI option that used less powerful GPUs for training. Several AI associated brands saw massive drops in market value during that time as the industry was revving up to invest even more money into high powered AI GPUs. However, DeepSeek has been marred by claims of unauthorized “reverse engineering” of other popular models to train its chatbot.

Despite OpenAI's efforts to protect its technologies, DeepSeek has maintained its place as a competitor and remains available globally. So far, OpenAI said its primary mode of action against the company has been to remove users that seem like they are trying to execute distillation methods on its models to extract data for outside development, Reuters noted.

The reasoning mode is tailored toward users that have highly specialized use cases, which require clear guardrails, accurate data, and practical applications. The new Deep Think update is now available in the Gemini app for Google AI Ultra subscribers. Google is also making the AI mode available through the Gemini API to select researchers, engineers and enterprises for the first time.

Google shared that early testers of Gemini 3 Deep Think include Lisa Carbone, a Rutgers University mathematician who used Gemini 3 Deep think to find a logical law in her technical mathematics paper that had previously passed through human peer review without being flagged.

Other uses for the updated model allow users to create 3D-printed models based on their sketches. It generates a file that can be sent to a 3D printing machine for creation. 

Google has showcased the prowess of Gemini 3 Deep Think in various academic benchmarks, which have exceeded the performance of previous versions of the technology. The latest version has set a new standard of 48.4%, without tools on Humanity’s Last Exam, a test fashioned to assess modern frontier models.

The model also scored a record 84.6% on the ARC-AGI-2 benchmark for reasoning tasks, which was verified by the ARC Prize Foundation. It achieved an Elo of 3455 on Codeforces, a platform that hosts competitive programming challenges. The model gained gold-medal results in math, chemistry, and physics at the 2025 International Olympiad for each subject.

The updates come after Google originally introduced Gemini 3 Deep Think in November 2025. The advanced AI model finds competition in similar brands, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude, which both have higher tiered versions with more elaborate reasoning models.

Media, analysts, executives, and other guests will attend the Galaxy Unpacked event live as it begins at 10 a.m. PT. or 1 p.m. ET, 6 p.m. GMT, and 7 p.m. CET. The event will also be available for live streaming for those watching remotely at Samsung.com.

Samsung stated it will share “its latest Galaxy innovations,” at the launch event. In addition to the Galaxy S26 series, which should include the Galaxy S26 Ultra, alongside the Galaxy S26 Plus and standard Galaxy S26, the brand is likely to announce the Galaxy Buds 4, and the Galaxy Buds 4 Pro wireless earbuds.

Despite the many rumors circulating about the Galaxy S26 series, the teaser Samsung shared does not give much away about what it has in store for its new products. A Galaxy AI logo comes out of its typical Galaxy Unpacked box at the end, suggesting AI integration will be a continued focus for the brand.

Samsung has already opened a “Galaxy Reserve” option on its teaser page, allowing you to sign up with your name and email address to get a $30 credit, which you can used toward a pre-order. You will also be entered in a raffle to win a $5,000 gift card.

The brand also stated that once its new flagships are available, customers will be able to take advantage of up to $900 in trade-in savings or get a $150 credit without a trade-in after reserving and pre-ordering on the Samsung website.

The Galaxy Reserve offer is also expected to transfer to AT&T and Best Buy; however, the brands have not yet announced the deal.

The Galaxy Reserve sign-up will be available until February 25 at 9:59 a.m. PT.

The industry has seen manufacturers, including Samsung, truncate what is offered within smartphone packaging in terms of cords and plugs, and will advertise the latest fast charging technology as a sold separately option. It is possible this is the brand’s current strategy. With Samsung offering both a standard case without Qi2 support and the Qi2 charging case, consumers could be forced to purchase a Qi2-enabled case to benefit from wireless charging features. Samsung has already announced its 25W magnetic wireless charger, which is another sold separately product, according to Sam Mobile.

Rumors indicate that Samsung had plans to fully integrate Qi2 magnets into the Galaxy S26 smartphones to enable the universal Qi2 charging standard on its devices but has since shifted those plans to future flagship series. The rollout may not occur until next year. Until then, the manufacturer appears to have a focus on adding Qi2 magnets to accessories, according to Nieuwemobiel.nl.

The informant shared leaked images and details, which indicated that Samsung Galaxy S26 series official cases will come in both standard options and “built-in MagSafe options,” with the latter expected to support the latest charging standard.

The Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) announced availability of the latest Qi2 charging standard in July 2025, bringing universal wireless charging ability up to 25-watts to numerous devices, including Android smartphones. The WPC detailed that just over a dozen devices, receivers, and transmitters had already been certified according to the standard ahead of the official announcement. The HMD Skyline launched in July 2024 as the first Android smartphone with Qi wireless certification, followed by the Pixel 10 line of smartphones in August 2025. Outside of these devices, other brands that have included some form of Qi wireless charging compatibility, include the Oppo Find X8 and X9, which have taken a similar approach to Samsung with Qi enabled accessories instead of integrating the devices.

Highlights of the Samsung Galaxy A17 include its 50-megapixel triple-lens camera system, 90Hz display and 5,000mAh battery, as well as Gemini AI on board. 

The plan includes no activation fees, no fine print, no bill credits, and customers are not required to have ID, a credit check, or to be locked into a contract to sign up for this plan. 

In addition to the Samsung Galaxy A17 for free, subscribers get unlimited 5G data, and unlimited talk and text. They also get to participate in T-Mobile Tuesdays perks, and the Scam Shield feature to block scam calls from coming through. 

The plan also includes a five-year price guarantee for talk and text and data. 

Better Value plan for families

Customers can also pair the Samsung Galaxy A17 smartphone with the Better Value plan at T-Mobile, a new offering as of Wednesday that costs $140 a month for three lines with AutoPay or $46 plus taxes and fees per line. 

The brand noted in a press release that the Better Value plan is intended to offer premium wireless service and extras for families, and both existing and new customers without an exorbitant price. New subscribers with three or more phone lines switching at least two lines to T-Mobile are eligible for this plan. Current subscribers that have been with the network for five or more years and have three or more lines and must have added at least one new line during those years are also eligible.

Better Value plan subscribers can also take advantage of various T-Mobile perks, such as Magenta Status, which allows for access to deals from hotels, car rentals, concerts and festivals, as well as free DashPass by DoorDash, and many T-Mobile Tuesdays perks.

The wireless service provider put out a statement on X on Thursday in which it detailed that the $20 account credits should cover “multiple days of service.”

“Yesterday, we did not meet the standard of excellence our customers expect and that we expect of ourselves,” Verizon said.

“This credit isn’t meant to make up for what happened. No credit really can. But it’s a way of acknowledging your time and showing that this matters to us.”

The network detailed that general subscribers can redeem the credits by logging into their myVerizon app. They will then receive a text message detailing when the credit is available. Additionally, Verizon detailed it will work with business customers directly. 

Initial reports indicated that the outage, which spread throughout several states across the U.S. began at approximately midday on Wednesday in eastern time. Observers saw peak complaints through the Downdetector webpage an hour later, in locations including New York, Houston, Atlanta, Dallas, and Miami, affecting up to 177,000 subscribers. Additional high complaint areas included Kailua-Kona, Forest Grove, Portland, Chicago, Brooklyn, Hilo, Richmond, and Virginia Beach, according to Phone Arena. 

The outage made it so users were unable to complete calls, send and receive text messages, phones had no signal, and users had issues with 5G internet. iPhone users noted that their devices were stuck in SOS mode during the outage, so they could not complete inbound or outbound calls, but users could use FaceTime audio to communicate between iPhones. 

The outage lasted between eight to 10 hours depending on the location. Service was fully restored at approximately 10 p.m. eastern time. Verizon addressed the issues at the time, noting via social media that the network lapse was likely a “software issue,” which it was working to resolve. The company ultimately stated that there was no connection that the outage was caused by a cyberattack. The Federal Communications Commission has also announced its investigation into the incident. 

This isn’t Verizon’s first outage issue. The carrier also experienced major down time last August, which the network similarly attributed to a software issue, Bloomberg detailed.

Inc. noted that scores of frustrated Verizon customers began flooding the official Verizon Support X account with concern during the outage and were met with responses from human agents at the other end. 

During a time when AI automation is becoming more standard, Verizon’s consumer group CEO, Sampath Sowmyanarayan has been quoted as saying the company aims to use AI to take some of the “cognitive workload” off of employees so they can focus on communicating with customers. 

A small number of AT&T and T-Mobile subscribers also reported network issues, due to not being able to make calls to people with Verizon numbers. This sparked the carriers to share some cheeky rebuttals on social media, ensuring that their networks were up and running. The X posts notably went viral.

“T-Mobile’s network is keeping our customers connected, and we’ve confirmed that our network is operating normally and as expected. However, due to Verizon’s reported outage, our customers may not be able to reach someone with Verizon service at this time,” T-Mobile said on X.  “Our network? Solid. If you’re experiencing issues, it’s not us.....it’s the other guys. Some things are just out of our hands! - BUT if you're interested in giving us a try,” AT&T said on X.

This has been Google’s ChromeOS strategy since approximately 2023, to test new features on its line of Chromebook Plus models, which was introduced in tandem with its AI feature rollout. Then the brand would make the features more widely available at a later date on the rest of its Chromebook lineup. Now several 2026 Chromebook Plus and standard Chromebook models are getting the latest AI features from Google at the same time. The netbooks come from brands including Acer, Asus, HP, and Lenovo, mixing Google’s AI-powered services with the latest tech specifications for the coming year. Here’s a rundown of the 2026 Chromebooks announced at CES.

Acer Chromebook 315

The latest Acer Chromebook 315 is powered by an Arm-based MediaTek Kompanio 540 processor, featuring a battery life of up to 13 hours, and enhanced DTS audio.

ASUS Chromebook CM14 / CM15

The enterprise-ready Chromebooks from Asus are powered by MediaTek Kompanio 540 processors, feature up to 8GB memory and 128GB storage, 16:9 FHD displays and six color options. They include HDMI, two USB Type-C ports for input options. In terms of design the laptops include a latching battery system that opens without a tool, allowing for simple maintenance and upgrades, while maintaining MIL-STD-810H durability standards. For sustainability purposes the chassis is made of recycled plastics and wear-resistant paint. 

ASUS Chromebook CM32 Detachable

A hybrid work and education focused Chromebook, the model features a detachable pogo-pin keyboard with optional accessories including a ruggedized case and wireless charging stylus. The device itself is durable with a 12-inch 2.5K 120Hz display with 600 nits brightness and Gorilla Glass protection. Additionally, the entire device has been certified according to the 24 MIL-STD-810H military-grade test standards. It is powered by a MediaTek Kompanio 540 processor and includes 8GB memory, 128GB storage and WiFi 7.

HP Chromebook Plus x360 14

A rugged productivity focused Chromebook with a drop-tested design, a 14-inch 2K touch screen display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, and a 360-degree hinge that allows it to go between laptop to tablet mode. The device features an Intel processor and Google’s Titan C security chip. Its 41-watt-hour battery supports up to 8 hours of power as well as fast charging with an optional 45 W USB-C GaN power adapter. 

HP Chromebook Plus 14

A productivity focused, daily driver Chromebook with a 14-inch 2K LCD screen with a 16:10 aspect ratio and an FHD camera. The device supports up to 11 hours of battery life with a 65-watt-hour battery. Design-wise the Chromebook features a full number pad across its keyboard and a larger touchpad, as well as a fingerprint reader, 5-megapixel webcam with privacy shutter. It is tested according to the MIL-STD-810H durability standards. It supports Waves audio tuning. 

Dell is going back to basics with a revamp of its XPS laptop line, following the scrapping of its consumer laptops in 2025 in favor of a more streamlined Dell branding.

The XPS 14 and XPS 16 will be available starting January 6 in limited configurations in the US and Canada. The XPS 14 will start at $2,049.00, and the XPS 16 at $2,199.99. The XPS 14 will also be available in an Ubuntu 24.04 configuration later this year.

The return of the XPS line does not get rid of Dell’s 2025 product revamp. The new tiers replacing the Inspiron, Precision, and Latitude lines remain; the XPS brand just stands as an option alongside the base-tier Dell model laptops as a consumer option. Notably, the Dell brand options did not get a refresh for 2026.

The original rebrand, which focused on AI-first pro and enterprise products, was a shock to journalists and enthusiasts alike. Admitting its misstep at a media preview event, Dell said that the return of the XPS models is a solid commitment to its consumer business. The new models being showcased at CES 2026 include the Dell XPS 14 and XPS 16, which have a focus on display, design, performance, and battery life for everyday users. 

The new laptop models are made of CNC aluminum and durable Gorilla Glass to provide a premium look and feel and include the XPS branding embossed on the back panel of the front cover. Dell said this detail was a direct request from fans of the XPS line. Both models are 14.6mm in height, and the XPS 14 weighs 3lbs less and is more compact than a MacBook Air 13, Dell noted. The XPS 16 weighs 3.6lbs, down nearly one pound from its prior generation. Both models will be available in Graphite color options at launch, with a Shimmer color scheme launching later in the year. 

The brand paid special attention to the keyboard design, bringing back a traditional function key layout. The keys themselves are set within a deeper dish inside the chassis, which allows for more accurate and faster typing. While visually seamless, the glass touchpad has a subtle etching that allows users to tactilely identify the boundaries. 

Coming in 14-inch and 16-inch options, the laptops feature a tandem OLED display. This is a technology that Dell debuted in 2024, which allows for improved brightness, efficiency, color stability, and longer lifespan of the component. It supports variable refresh rate between 1 and 120Hz, with a demo showing how the lowest refresh rate was still comfortably visible. The laptop is also customizable with a 2K LCD panel, which offers impressive battery efficiency. The 70-watt battery on both models supports 27 hours of Netflix streaming or over 40 hours of local video playback, which Dell touts as the best battery life on a product to date.  

The new XPS laptops are powered by the Intel Core Ultra 3 Series processors, which include built-in 12 XE cores Intel Arc Graphics. The hardware setup provides 57% better performance and 50% faster graphics performance than the prior generation chips. The components also power several of the most high-power experiences on the devices with precision, including Copilot+ PC, image editing, video playback, and gameplay. This is coupled with a new thermal system with fans that are the largest and thinnest on a Dell laptop, allowing the XPS models to maintain performance while remaining cool and quiet, with optimal battery life. 

In addition to the Dell XPS 14 and XPS 16, Dell also teased the XPS 13 as its thinnest and lightest XPS laptop to date. The model is expected to be 13mm in width and will feature InfinityEdge screens and Dell’s most accessible price point for the XPS. The XPS 13 will be available later in 2026.

How well will XPS compete?

Dell said it does not want to “cherry-pick” the portion of the industry it wants to participate in but rather play in all price brands and product categories. This is where the XPS line comes in, as an option for the all-in-one consumer, a creative, a gamer, who does everything on one device. Meanwhile, the base model Dell line is considered for the light consumer user, who does work, browses the internet, and checks email.  

Dell’s closest comparison to the XPS 14 is the MacBook Air 13, which starts at $999, a whopping $1050 less than the laptop, and performs relatively the same tasks as both the XPS and the base model Dell. 

While options are good for any brand, internal cannibalization could also be a slippery slope for the XPS line at this point, as not everyone is a media member or computer enthusiast. If looking at price points, an average consumer could easily look at a cheaper Dell option to save money, a higher-tier Dell option for more power, or Alienware for gaming specialty, leaving the XPS line out in the cold.
