OnePlus 7 leak reveals pop-up selfie camera in hi-res renders
OnePlus may take some design risks with its upcoming flagship and introduce a pop-up selfie camera to the device for the sake of expanding its display ratio. Renders have surfaced, via popular leakster, Onleaks and Pricebaba showing a OnePlus device with a camera module coming out of the of its top frame. The smartphone is expected to be called the OnePlus 7 but is name is not yet confirmed.
Preliminary spec details for the OnePlus 7 suggest a 6.5-inch full HD+ display with a 95 percent screen-to-body thanks to the pop-up selfie camera. With bezels so close to the edge, the device would not be able to support a front-facing camera without a hole-punch or top-notch display.
While uncommon, other manufacturers have delved into the pop-up selfie camera space. The Vivo Apex, Vivo V15 Pro, Oppo F11 Pro, and Samsung Galaxy A90 all feature this camera setup coupled with extremely thin bezels. Most devices are set trigger the self-camera to pop-up when users press the front-facing camera key within the camera app.
There is no word on how the pop-up camera mechanism will work on the OnePlus 7. Currently, informants have only identified standard buttons on the device, including its power button and volume rockers. It is likely the OnePlus 7 will similar feature an in-app command key.
Early leaks of the OnePlus 7 suggested that the device might feature a sliding mechanism to reveal selfie-camera. We’ve seen devices, such as the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 with the sliding camera feature. Seeing companies like OnePlus opt for this kind of front-facing alternative could be an indication that pop-up selfie cameras may surpass sliding selfie cameras moving forward.
Other rumored specs for the OnePlus 7 include 162.6 x 76 x 8.8mm dimensions, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chip, 6GB of RAM, a triple rear camera setup, a 4,150mAh battery, USB-C, and on Android 9 Pie.
The renders also reveal the OnePlus 7 likely won’t feature a headphone jack. Other features that are unlikely for the device include 5G connectivity, despite its Snapdragon 855 chip, and wireless charging.
The OnePlus 7 may launch in the May to June timeframe with an expected price of about $500.
