OpenAI's highly anticipated GPT-5 could arrive next month
OpenAI's GPT-5 could launch in August and aims to unify models, offering seamless text, image, and reasoning.
OpenAI’s next generative model, GPT-5, could be close to release, with a report from the Verge indicating the technology could be available in early August.
Internal sources told the publication that this timeframe could be the best indication for a GPT-5 launch after several false launch predictions in the past. Rumors of a GPT-5 launch have circulated since 2023, but there has been high anticipation for a 2025 release of the next AI model. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman confirmed a delay in development in April, but teased on social media last week that the model would come "soon."
Meanwhile, Altman has discussed the capability of GPT-5 on the recent Theo Von podcast, describing that the model made him feel “useless relative to the AI.” Developers have also observed GPT-5 code being publicly tested, which is a good indication that the model is close to an official release, Verge noted.
The coming GPT-5 model is set to unify previous models into a single model that can seamlessly process text, images, reasoning, and other functions that are associated with AI. The model will put the functions of the O-series models, such as o3, and GPT-series models, such as GPT-4.5, so a single model can benefit from the best of OpenAI’s developments at once. The model is expected to be able to remember and refer back to past sessions and overall make the technology easier to use.
There is also expected to be different tiers of GPT-5, including mini and nano, which will cater to different user types, such as general users, developers, and businesses. Prior reports noted that ChatGPT free users will likely have limited access to the GPT-5 model, while those with Plus and Pro subscriptions have more extensive access to the features of the new AI.
