Samsung Galaxy Z TriFold advances foldable ability with triple-screen smartphone
Samsung's latest Galaxy Z TriFold device introduces a new foldable form factor with three panels and two foldable sides.
Samsung is expanding its foldable segment with the announcement of the Galaxy Z TriFold, the long-anticipated triple-screen folding smartphone.
After having unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and 7 Flip 7 in July, this is the brand’s third major foldable launch of the year. However, due to its unique design and potentially high price tag, the Galaxy Z TriFold is slated to be a niche product for the time being, attracting those that have unique productivity and entertainment requirements.
The manufacturer announced the new form factor in Korea on Tuesday. The device includes two hinges, which allows it to fold inward twice, like a booklet, into a compact unit that keeps the internal display protected. The folding display is protected by a reinforced overcoat on the shock-absorbing layer, to ensure it remains durable. The device is also equipped with alerts to prevent users from folding the handset in an incorrect manner, Samsung said.
With the double hinge design, Samsung claims the handset is as sturdy and as advanced a foldable as it has ever made. The structure allows for minimal gaps at the folds and for the handset to maintain stability though the hinges differ in size and weight. The handset is also rated IP48 for water and dust resistance.
Samsung has worked to make the device as thin and light as possible with its thinnest point being 3.9mm unfolded, and 12.9mm when compact. Meanwhile, its total weight is 309 grams. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which features a 8-inch main folding screen and 6.5-inch front screen is 4.2mm and 8.9mm when folded; weighing 215 grams, Engadget noted.
The Galaxy Z TriFold folds out into a 10-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X QXGA+ tablet sized display, with 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 1,600 nits peak brightness. It splits into three 6.5-inch display sections that can run apps independently. The UI allows for several multi window orientations. Additionally, the device features a 6.5-inch FHD+ cover display, also with a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and 2,600 nits peak brightness.
Hardware in the Galaxy Z TriFold includes a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB and 1TB internal storage options, and a 5,600mAh battery with 45W super-fast charging. Its main camera system includes a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 200-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens. The front system is a dual camera with 10-megapixel front lenses.
The multi-folding smartphone will compete with Chinese counterparts, such as the Huawei Mate XT, which has been available in international markets since last year. However, the Galaxy Z TriFold stands out as it is slated for availability in the U.S.
The Galaxy Z TriFold will sell for approximately $2,500, according to Reuters. The folding handset is set to launch in Korea on December 12, with additional market availability in China, Taiwan, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates soon after. The foldable will later be released in the U.S. sometime during the first quarter of 2026. Samsung has not yet shared specific launch details for the foldable in the U.S.
